This PERSPECTIVES Special looks at the results from an ongoing programme of eDNA testing around the world carried out in partnership with SailGP Germany, ORRAA, NatureMetrics and local scientists.
Ocean health is essential for planetary and human well-being. However, we lack a full understanding of how the Ocean functions, and building knowledge can be made difficult by complex geopolitics. Technologies such as eDNA, which identifies the traces of DNA left behind by organisms in marine or other environments, can make a valuable contribution here.
To date, our partnership has conducted eDNA testing in seven Ocean locations. In this report we explain the use of eDNA and summarise our findings so far, what they can tell us and the role of local scientists in sampling and interpreting the results. Further testing will take place in five locations this year. One priority for 2026 is to build local awareness of Ocean issues and local involvement, with a focus on educational programmes: we highlight our work in this area in New York City.
